Many of you on Instagram asked great questions about my setup and Methanol in general and I promised to do an FAQ and share it with all of you in hopes that you all benefit from it. If you see any errors, please feel free to reach out so I can make corrections.
1- Could you cover your routing for a trunk setup? Type of lines and fittings used?
I’ve used the Nylon tubing in the past and had success with it, so I decided to use it again. To keep things simple and protect the tubing from the elements, I ran the line through the small hood release cable hole through the firewall. I also used that hole to run all of my wiring for the controller (TIGHT fit). From there, I tucked the line and wires safely under the door sills all the way back to the trunk.
In my experience, nozzle holders will eventually leak. To eliminate that, I ran the tubing to a solenoid in the engine bay. Then I converted the output of the solenoid to a compression fitting that takes a compression line which is compatible with Aquamist nozzles. 2- Do I need two pumps on a single tank to be able to run 4 lines/nozzles?
Depending on your power goals and how much methanol you need to spray, most meth pumps out there should supply enough pressure for four nozzles when the correct sizes are used. I would highly suggest that you speak with your tuner to figure out nozzle sizes and how far meth injection can take you horsepower-wise. One of my favourite setups out there is the Aquamist 4-way hex manifold. That will allow you to run four compression lines to four nozzles fitted directly to a throttle spacer plate if space allows in that area. In my experience, compression lines on the high pressure side are less likely to leak.
3- Is running in tank E85, say E25 or E30 along with 100% methanol injection redundant? Any gains?
In a high compression boosted engine, there is no such thing as too much octane. The higher the octane, the more protection you have against knock. Now, depending on your setup, tune, and purpose for the build, you might not need all that protection, especially if it’s difficult to get E85. Depending on who you ask, there are other factors that you might need to think about such as injector head room and whether or not you’re using methanol as additional fueling or just for cooling purposes. But no one is better to talk to about these specifics than your tuner.
On my Speed, I like to run some E85 in the tank for the peace of mind, especially during hot track days.
4- Can I run E85 in my Methanol tank?
Generally, no. Most Methanol kits out there use the Aquatec 5800 Series Pumps. These pumps are not compatible with petroleum fluids and E85 contains at least 15% pump gas.
5- Can I run windshield washer fluid?
Hell yes! Most washer fluids out there contain 20-40% Methanol. For example, Super Tech Windshield Washer Fluid -20F (Walmart) contains 30-40% Methanol as listed here: https://www.msdsdigital.com/super-tech-windshield-washer-fluid-20f-msds
Just make sure to stay away from fluids that contain detergents such as bug remover. Generally, you will not be able to use washer fluid mixes as additional fueling, however, it’s a great and cheap way for cooling down your boost charge!
6- I was told I shouldn’t run more than a 50/50 mix, how come you’re telling me to run 100% methanol?
On old school carbureted engines that is true; sucks for them! On Fuel Injected (EFI) cars, such as the Mazdaspeed, a 100% mix will give you the most desirable results in terms of cooling and fueling. Keep in mind, ECU tuning is required to optimize air to fuel ratio or your car will likely run very rich. Unlike water, Methanol is fuel and will burn and create energy during the combustion cycle in the engine while boosting octane and absorbing heat. It’s recommended to mix in some Top Lube to minimize the effects of alcohol on your meth parts and cylinder head.
